When Muslims arrived in the US as immigrants, they started building "Islamic Centers" to serve as masajid and community centers at the same time. However the "community center" function rarely came to fruition because funds were always lacking, and Muslims refused to borrow money from banks because of interest. Would it be more helpful if Muslims build "Muslim malls," which would house a masjid, halal restaurants and shops, and which can be leased to raise initial and operating funds for the masjid? That would also attract more people to the masjid, as people would come to pray, eat and shop at the same time.

Salamu Alaikom. This sounds like a great idea !! My Islamic center has to rent out a portion of the building to stay open, and everyone’s worried we’ll just lose the entire space someday. God Forbid. Anyway. I don’t know anyone who has the ability to organize something like this, but I’m gonna put the word out ! Salam.

Muslim Malls sounds tacky, but I like your thinking. Most of the Church’s in England were built in or near the market place for that very reason. Market towns had their own Cathedrals as well.

That would be pretty cool….hard to find places that dont serve pork in the food where I live so eating options are limited but I would be thrilled to see a place like that
