Afghan assault Marines dismissed

Two Royal Marines have been sentenced for assaulting an Afghan prisoner after he had been detained on suspicion of planting a roadside bomb. Leaders of the Hamas militant movement which controls the Gaza Strip have said they are working to curb rocket attacks against Israel by smaller factions. Spokesman Ayman Taha said the Hamas government was trying to maintain calm in Gaza for "the national interest". He spoke hours after Israeli planes carried out bombing raids on what it said were weapons factories in Gaza.
