Two appear on terrorism charges

Two men are due to appear in court in Newry later on Monday charged with possessing explosives. The men, aged 21 and 23, were arrested on Thursday as part of a police operation against suspected dissident republicans in Armagh. As part of the same operation, police arrested three other men and two women over the weekend.

Dissidents ‘like street gangs’

Northern Ireland’s chief constable has compared dissident republican terrorists to criminal street gangs he encountered in London in the 1980s. Matt Baggott was speaking on Radio Ulster’s Seven Days programme

Justice Minister Dermot Ahern also said the determination of dissident groups to mount attacks was "getting stronger and stronger". His comments come as a service will be held to mark the first anniversary of the deaths of two soldiers in Antrim

Police attacked with petrol bombs

Translink has said one of its buses has been attacked during what a company spokesperson described as "general unrest" in west Belfast. The police have been unable to confirm reports of trouble on the Springfield Road but Translink said it has withdrawn its buses from the area. The trouble was reportedly focused around the Mackie’s factory site.

Device ‘targets’ NI police station

There are reports that an explosive device has been thrown at a police station in Craigavon, County Armagh, but there are no reports of injuries. Police said Brownlow police station was targeted on Saturday evening but the building was not hit. Army bomb experts are at the scene and a nearby road has been closed

UVF supergrass ‘becomes Catholic’

Two brothers who admitted involvement in the murder of UDA man Tommy English have agreed to give evidence against nine other men charged with the murder. They are Newtownabbey UVF men David Stewart, 35, of Carntall Rise, and Robert Stewart, 39, of Ballyearl Court. Belfast Crown Court was told they should be given significantly reduced sentences for helping the police

Police examine suspicious vehicle

A security alert is under way in north Belfast following the discovery of a suspicious vehicle. The Rosevale Street area has been cordoned off and a number of residents have been evacuated from their homes as a precaution.

‘Miracle’ that NI bomb did not kill

The car bomb that exploded at Newry courthouse was "very significant" and 500 – 800lbs of explosives, police have said. No-one was killed or injured in the blast which was heard two miles away.
