What does the Quran say about the earths shape and an ostrich egg?

I may be wrong but I read somewhere that the Quran said the earth is shaped like an ostrich egg.

Hmmmm – maybe in some weird translation. Not in Arabic. It does not say that.

Edit: Now I see the verse Imam quoted which I think is translated differently that what I understand
[79:31] وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ ذَٲلِكَ دَحَٮٰهَا[] And the earth, along with it, He spread forth.

The word "Daha" has a couple meanings in Arabic: to even out, to roll, to spread/extend, cause to become egg shaped.

Now, the "ha" suffix means "it". So when you say "Dahaha" it translates to a few things (depending on context): Rolled it out, expanded it, evened it out, spread forth or made egg-shaped.

If you choose the egg-shaped translation then that’s your choice. Mine is as per the translation I provided.

SHAPE OF THE EARTH IS SPHERICAL

In early times, people believed that the earth was flat. For centuries, men were afraid to venture out too far, for fear of falling off the edge! Sir Francis Drake was the first person who proved that the earth is spherical when he sailed around it in 1597.

☞ Consider the following Qur’anic verse regarding the alternation of day and night:

“Seest thou not that Allah merges Night into Day and He merges Day into Night?” [Al-Qur’an 31:29]

Merging here means that the night slowly and gradually changes to day and vice versa. This phenomenon can only take place if the earth is spherical. If the earth was flat, there would have been a sudden change from night to day and from day to night.

☞ The following verse also alludes to the spherical shape of the earth:

“He created the heavens and the earth in true (proportions): He makes the Night overlap the Day, and the Day overlap the Night.” [Al-Qur’an 39:5]

The Arabic word used here is Kawwara meaning ‘to overlap’ or ‘to coil’– the way a turban is wound around the head. The overlapping or coiling of the day and night can only take place if the earth is spherical. The earth is not exactly round like a ball, but geo-spherical, i.e. it is flattened at the poles.

☞ The following verse contains a description of the earth’s shape:

“And the earth, moreover, hath He made egg shaped.” [Al-Qur’an 79:30]

The Arabic word for egg here is dahaahaa1 which means an ostrich-egg. The shape of an ostrich-egg resembles the geo-spherical shape of the earth. Thus the Qur’an correctly describes the shape of the earth, though the prevalent notion when the Qur’an was revealed was that the earth was flat.

According to the link below "The Qur’an does not make the false claim that the earth is "egg-shaped" after all. This is only the error of a misguided propaganda translation. Claiming that "dahaha" means "egg-shaped" is an atrocious mistranslation of the Arabic word."

Check the source below for a much better understanding.

Here is an explanation about the ostrich egg remark. The word used in the Quran doesn’t refer to the egg but to the area where the egg is laid, and either way is wrong.

The Koran refers to the earth as flat.

The word in question is the verb (dahâ). This verb comes from the tri-literal root d-h-w, and it appears in the Qur’ân in relation to the Earth in the following verse: “And the Earth, after that, He spread out (dahâhâ).” [Sûrah al-Nâzi`ât: 30]

This word conveys one concept in the Arabic language: that of “spreading, leveling, flattening, and smoothing out”.

Salma’s answer seems the most accurate.

@Sonja: Firstly, Aristotle proved the earth was spherical in 330 BCE. Secondly, the earth is not an ovoid like an ostrich egg but an ellipsoid, the opposite. Ostrich eggs are stretched at the poles, the earth is stretched at the equator.

    Earth is geo-spherical in shape

The Quran mentions the actual shape of the earth in the following verse: “And we have made the earth egg shaped”. [Al-Quran 79:30]

The Arabic word Dahaha means egg shaped. It also means an expanse. Dahaha is derived from Duhiya which specifically refers to the egg of an ostrich which is geo-spherical in shape, exactly like the shape of the earth.

Thus the Quran and modern established science are in perfect harmony.
